A benefit concert in 2005 by its brass players and drummer can be considered the birth of the Deutsche Opera Berlin Big Band. However, the celebrated debut concert of the now "grown up" formation, first took place with the current line-up in September 2006. Since then, the well-known, big band specialist Rolf von Nordenskjöld has been at the musical helm.
Each year, the band invites solo vocalists to take part. The regular concerts in Berlin, drawing an audience of well over a thousand, may confidently be described as a sensation. On this recording from September 2008, the American Bill Ramsey is the guest singer. Though famous in Germany for hits like “Ohne Krimi geht die Mimi nie ins Bett“ and “Pigalle, Pigalle“, Bill Ramsey's roots lie in swing and jazz, a fact proven by his numerous recordings and concerts, including those with the Mangelsdorff brothers.
Bill Ramsey is now considered to be a swing legend and one of the last blues shouters.
